Point of Pines, Arizona
and Surrounding Areas on the
San Carlos Apache Reservation

Point of Pines is hidden in the Natanes Mountains on the San Carlos
Apache Reservation in Arizona. The region surrounding Point of Pines
is a great place to explore with not only pine forests but also juniper trees,
expansive grasslands, rugged cliffs and other things you'd expect to find
at the "low edge of the high country." Point of Pines Lake is small, but what
the reservoir lacks in size it makes up for with its remote, less-visited
environment and ample wildlife including deer, turkeys, ospreys and great
blue herons. I was able to photograph bears near the lake and bighorn
sheep at some cliffs a few miles to the south.
I even saw a mountain
lion at the shore of the lake but wasn't quick enough to snap a photo.
