The Crater Range, Arizona
The Crater Range of southern Arizona is a largely ignored area full of rugged volcanic
formations, including rocky ridges and spires that were once conduits for molten magma.
These formations, along with saguaro and cholla cacti, make it place where pretty much
everything is either pointed or prickly. The mountains are located within the Barry M.
Goldwater Air Force Range, but the eastern end of the Crater Range is open to the
public (with a free permit available online). There isn't much in the way of established
trails in this seldom-visited region but if you stick to low-laying desert corridors
between the jagged volcanic formations it's relatively easy to roam about on foot.
