S P Crater

These
photos are not posted for their aesthetic value, but just to show
the rim of S P Crater, the volcano north of Flagstaff. The cone is so
large that even with a wide-angle lens, two photos had to be combined to create the
first image below. The
second photo shows the cone's enormous depth. Most hikers probably
wouldn't venture to the bottom for fear of getting stuck down
there. What is most amazing about this natural wonder is that
there is no paved road leading to its base and no trail leading to the
summit. It's a an incredibly steep climb that takes about a half-hour. No tourists. No sidewalks. No
visitors center. Just a giant volcano out in the middle of nowhere.
And
here's a bit of trivia: "S.P." stands for "Shit Pie". Apparently, from an
airplane, that's what the volcano looks like...but of course they can't
print "Shit Pie" on a map so they initialize it. |
