NORTHERN ARIZONA November 23, 2009
Dunes are very rare in Arizona, but small ones can be found in certain wind-swept regions of the high desert. The dunes below are in the Painted Desert, just north of the Little Colorado River and east of Highway 89. No particular location, actually. I just followed some dirt road for miles onto the Navajo Reservation, then parked along the road and hiked a couple hours into some obscure patch of dirt. Other than a wild pony I didn't see another soul the entire day. It was 11 degrees in the morning.
Humphreys Peak, Arizona's highest point, looms over a dune many miles to the north. I challenge anyone to show me a true sand dune AND the San Francisco Peaks in any another photograph.
I'm obsessed with S-shaped curves. I find them in every type of landscape.
My hiking partner for the day. He was friendly but when I asked if I could pet him he said no.
