Catalina Mts.

Arizona

I photographed these Desert Bighorn Sheep in the early 1980s on Pusch Ridge in the Catalina Mts. near Tucson. As a teen with my first camera I thought they were really great shots.

Back then the sheep were among 75 wild ewes and rams in the Pusch Ridge area. In October 2011, while re-visiting the area, I learned the animals have since disappeared. It’s possible there are a few left, but not even the Forest
Service can confirm that.

What has increased dramatically, however, are upscale resorts and homes built as high up in the mountains as possible. Many of the developments have absurdly ironic names like “La Reserve” and wealthy residents who have the audacity to claim they love the natural desert around them.

Gimmie a break, people. When will you learn you cannot love and preserve the desert while simultaneously scraping it off the face of the Earth.
