Agathla Peak and Church Rock,
Navajo Nation, Arizona
Agathla Peak and Church Rock are fairly close to each other, both
being on the Navajo Reservation south of Monument Valley. Church Rock
actually looks like a church, at least if you look at it from the west side.
Agathla Peak, which is considered sacred by the Navajo, towers 1,500
feet above the surrounding high desert. Some non-tribal members
also call this rock “El Capitan”. It’s also common for people to
mistake Agathla Peak for similar-looking Shiprock, which is
not too far away, just over the Arizona/New Mexico state line.
